Space maintainers are orthodontic appliances used in children to maintain the space where permanent teeth will emerge after premature loss of primary teeth. They prevent neighboring teeth from shifting in place of the lost tooth, thus preventing future crowding and orthodontic problems.
Fixed placeholders: It is attached to the tooth and cannot be removed by the child.
Animated placeholders: They are removable appliances, usually custom-made for each individual.
