Treatment of Young Permanent Teeth (Open Apex)
In young individuals, root development may not yet be complete when permanent teeth erupt. In this case, a natural opening remains at the root apex. This condition is called an "open apex." These teeth may require root canal treatment due to trauma, decay, or infection. However, conventional root canal treatment is not sufficient for these immature teeth. Therefore, pediatric dentists use specialized methods to support root development in teeth with open apexes and aim to retain the tooth.

- The fragility of the tooth is reduced and it becomes functionally usable.
- Aesthetics and chewing functions are preserved.

Who is it suitable for?
Children between the ages of 6 and 16 whose permanent teeth are not fully developed
Young patients with traumatic tooth damage
Individuals with teeth that have lost their vitality due to decay but whose root development has not been completed
What is the treatment process like?
Examination and Diagnosis: Root development is assessed with dental x-rays to determine the tooth's condition, vitality, and presence of infection.
Treatment Planning: If the tooth is vital, the process begins with medications that promote root development (regenerative endodontic treatment). If the tooth is not vital, the root apex is sealed with special filling materials, called apexification.
Closing the Channel: The opening at the root tip is closed with biocompatible materials to provide an apical plug, and then the canal is permanently filled.
Permanent Restoration: The upper portion of the tooth is restored with a filling or a crown. This is essential for both aesthetic and functional reasons. A crown is the ideal superstructure option for the success and longevity of the treatment.
Follow-up: The development and healing process of the tooth is monitored through check-ups at regular intervals.
