Fissure sealants are a procedure that seals the thin, deep grooves (fissures) found on the chewing surfaces of teeth with a special filling material. This method, typically applied to back teeth, makes cleaning easier and prevents cavities. The procedure is completely painless and is usually performed when primary or permanent teeth emerge. Permanent teeth continue to develop structurally for approximately three years after they erupt, making them more susceptible to cavities when they first appear. Fissure sealants are an effective preventative treatment for children at high and moderate risk of decay to protect their permanent teeth from decay.
