Root Canal Treatment for Open Apex Teeth
An open-apex tooth is a term generally used for teeth with incomplete root development or with widening of the root apex following trauma. Conventional root canal treatment methods cannot be applied to these teeth, as the lack of root apex closure can lead to leakage of root filling materials and treatment failure. In the treatment of open-apex teeth, if the tooth has lost vitality and root development has ceased, artificial sealing of the root apex is achieved using specialized materials and techniques. The goal of this procedure is to save the tooth and restore its function. Endodontic treatment of teeth with open apexes that retain their vitality involves removing only the infected tissue and allowing them to continue their development with biocompatible materials.

What is the treatment process like?
- Examination and X-ray: First, the condition of the tooth is evaluated in detail and root development and apex opening are determined.
- Cleaning the Channel: The infected tissue and bacteria inside the tooth are carefully removed. Treatment options are divided into two categories depending on the vitality of the tooth:
1. Closure of the Root Tip: An artificial closure is achieved by applying special biocompatible fillers (usually MTA or similar materials) to the area where the open apex is located.
2. Ensuring Root Development: The aim of biomaterials placed in the canal is to preserve the vitality of the tooth and continue root development.
- Temporary or Permanent Filling: After the root canal is filled, a filling or a crown is placed to restore the tooth's superstructure. The ideal superstructure for these teeth is a crown, which provides bacterial resistance and extends the restoration's lifespan.
- Controls: The success of the treatment and tissue healing are monitored through check-ups performed at regular intervals.
